There’s a chill in the air

As they say on Game of Thrones, “Winter is coming!” (at least it is in the Southern Hemisphere), so this seemed an appropriate choice!

Can’t believe that I haven’t posted this before now!

What would it take?

I had a thought this morning, as I was ironing my shirt.  It all came about because something in the back of my mind had been agitating after seeing this meme on the SDA memes page on Facebook:

From: Facebook – SDA memes

My thought was this, “What would it take to disprove 1844, The Investigative Judgement and the Sanctuary doctrine?”

See, the problem I have is this, the above actively encourages us to apply Pascal’s Wager to the Sanctuary doctrine (I think I’ve posted on this previously, but just as a refresher for all of us Pascal’s Wager is where I, in essence, perform a Cost Benefits analysis on a given philosophical/religious position to decide whether I should choose to believe it or not.  If the equation shows that I have more to gain if the belief is right than I stand to lose if the belief is wrong then I should adopt the belief).  The problem is that Pascal’s Wager gives less weight to truth than it does to mercenary considerations, or to put it more clearly, “Truth be damned if there’s something in it for me!” which in turn makes it difficult to raise objections to, not because it makes it unobjectionable, but because it artificially solidifies the position in the minds of the adherents.

See, we’re talking about celestial matters, loftier happenings, things for which there can be no sensory evidence because they happen in a place where man cannot tread.  As a result all the arguments have to be based on religious tracts, which of course have little (if any) explicit discussion on the matters and so neither point can be conclusively proved, although the strength of the arguments will favour one side or the other.  The problem then is that if the anti-side of the argument is the stronger case it doesn’t matter because, “What if…?”.  Then the cost of not believing and the potential payoff for believing is too high to not believe, and we continue in a cycle of dishonest practice while claiming to hold the truth.

It will never cease to amaze me that a people so obsessed with Truth and having THE Truth prefer buying into nobo-daddy doctrines on the flimsy basis of Pascal’s Wager over questioning, investigating and striving, putting beliefs to the test and finding out whether or not they stand to the test of truth…

Warning… strong language, adult themes!

I love Bill Hicks’ ability to cut straight to the core of modern society.

Good Friday

May you take a moment to pause today to reflect not on the pain of Christ’s sacrifice, for that is not the point of the story, but on the fact that the sacrifice was made…
May you have hope that the God who was sacrificed will be forgiving…
And come Sunday morning may you find blessed hope that death will be denied…

What’s love got to do with it?
